About Us
Bent Northrop Memorial Library serves the residents of Fairfield, Vermont. BNML was established in 1987 with a gift from Bent Northrop’s daughter, Consuelo Northrop Bailey, as a memorial to her father, and officially opened in a dedication ceremony on October 2, 1988. Mary Northrop Wallis, sister of Consuelo, left a fund for books upon her death. Dr. Winston and Mrs. Frederika (Northrop) Sargent provided a third generous donation.
It’s quite an appropriate memorial as Bent Northrop and his wife, Katherine Fletcher Northrop, made great efforts and sacrifices to educate their daughters. Consuelo, a woman of many “firsts” in public service, was the first woman Lieutenant Governor in the United States. She authored a book entitled Leaves Before the Wind, a witty and charming account of a woman pioneering twentieth-century life in Vermont.
In addition to great books, the library offers Wi-Fi, online databases, computer access, magazines, downloadable audiobooks/eBooks, great programming to keep the community engaged, meeting space, and much more. As a public library, all of our basic services are free for anyone who wishes to use them. Fees may be charged for printing, photocopying, and other special services. Library Policies are established by the Library Board of Trustees.
